AN ARTWORK MADE OF PLEXIGLASS

The artwork before and after the restoration.

The restoration of this artwork was made during the course of "Restoration of assembled and/or painted synthetic materials 1" at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, under the supervision of Professor Lucia Vanghi.
The artwork was made by Vittorio Mascalchi, and it came from the MAMBO, the Museum of Modern Art of Bologna. It showed many problems due to the weakness of the material. The artist built a plexiglass box and inside he closed other three sheets of plexiglass. On each sheet he drew a part of the imagine so,  from the frontal view, the artwork revealed games of shadows and transparencies. Dealing with the adhesion of pieces of plexiglass it is hard: if the adhesive is weak, the sheets of pleaxiglass warp and separate at the junctions, so the dust was attracted inside the box and the whole opera appeared with a matt aspect. To keep together the unstuck parts, some tape was used and it left traces of glue on the surface. I removed those stiky traces and I made a very carefull superficial cleaning. I also cleaned the inner parts just opening one side of the box. I had also to reduce the warping of the internal sheets of plexiglass, which had lost their own shape because of the weight of the artwork.

AN ASSEMBLAGE

The artwork before and after the restoration.

This small canvas, made by the artist Giordano Pavan, came from the MUSEO REMO BRINDISI located in Lido di Spina. I worked on it during the course of "Restoration of assembled and/or painted synthetic materials 1" at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, during my third year of study, supervised by Professor Lucia Vanghi. The artwork was stored not carefully, in this way a thick layer of dust obscured the colours. The paint was made with oil medium colours on an industrial canvas. Some elements were realized with cardboard tubes, and they were fixed on the surface with small nails. Passing the time, the gravity caused the separation of the parts. Under the artist signature I discovered another artist signature made with a pencil, with a different date: 1972. I made a superficial cleaning, I fixed the separated parts and  I retouched some local colour losses.

GHIACCIO (ICE)

The painting before and after the restoration.

This painting, made by the artist Marcello Jori, was given to the school directly by the artist who, in a interesting interview, told us many important things about the technique he used to create it. In this way, we understood the cause of the canvas' weaving. The restoration of the painting was made by the group of 5 students at the course of  "Restoration of assembled and/or painted synthetic materials 2" at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna during the fourth year of study, using innovative techniques to smooth the support under the supervision of Professor Giovanna Scicolone.
