A 17TH CENTURY FRAME

The frame before and after the restoration.

The restoration of this frame was made during the course of "Restoration of gilding" at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna.
It was one of ten frames coming from the collection ZAMBECCARI preserved inside PALAZZO PEPOLI CAMPOGRANDE in Bologna. As usual, the frame was quite damaged on the protruding parts, and the dusting and cleaning operations often cause a thinning of the gold leaf which, becoming transparent, leave the bole visible. On this frame I used a traditional approach: cleaning of the surface from  the dirt, removal of the old putties, filling the holes with new stucco and then gilding the renewed parts. Because the new gold hue was too shiny for such a hold frame, I toned it. The work was made under the supervision of Professor Graziella Accorsi.

A SMALL FRAME

The frame before and after the gilding.

This small frame, owned by a private, was one of the works I did during my 300 hours summer practical training at the LABORATORIO DEGLI ANGELI in Bologna. The gold was very comsumed, leaving the bole visible but the owner didn't want to remake it. So, I filled the losses of wood on the edges, and after the gildind of those parts I aged the gold.

THE SCARSELLINO'S FRAME

The frame before the restoration.

This frame, located in a chapel inside the Basilica of San Petronio, was hosting a big painting of a local artist, called SCARSELLINO. While the restorer of the LABORATORIO DEGLI ANGELI was working on the painting, I had to clean the frame under her supervision. The cleaning was made in situ. Here, few pictures of the operation.

LEARNING THE TECHNIQUE: GILDING

The wooden panel made at the course and the one made for a friend of mine.

As first approach at the technique at the course of gilding at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, we realized a gilded wooden panel with a chosen subject. Mine was the repoduction of an old olive oil advertising. I didn't take pictures of the steps of that job, so I put here the pictures I made while I was creating a gilded table that I made as a gift for the wedding of a friend of mine.
